Yeah - I'd put different wheels on it, but it's chunky in the right places. Like Queen Latifah.

As an idea? Yes.

As a car? Nope. It's like a Subaru WRX hatchback...only worse in every conceivable way. It's why you see so many of them.

You can convert it easily to EVOX spec engine wise and be within autocross rules due to them being on the same line with the evo. A local guy did that.

You have a far better engine than a subaru does.

Downsides? No manual. DCT is slower than EVO's but not by much. Heavier than a EVO or WRX or STI.

I like the idea of it, but from what I've heard it's literally just a basic lancer in fancy dress. Do not want

That is not nearly a good enough reason for me.

Two of my friends having ringland failure is why I sold my WRX. If you are driving being constantly afraid your engine can go at any minute the car becomes pointless. If you ever felt like that then you know that's all the reason you need.

I personally wouldn't turn away a car that has been immensely popular and legendarily reliable (as well as an all-around good car) just because it's possible something might break someday. I drive an old Audi, that shit just doesn't scare me anymore.

And I certainly wouldn't go pick a Lancer Sportback instead.

It's not legendary reliability that subaru is known for. Like if you were to discuss Subaru on GRM for example everyone would bring up the engine issues. My Friend was a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury mechanic then went to a Subaru mechanic and he said they at one time had 7 of them in AT THE SAME TIME for engine failure and had 3 or 4 every month. He said that it was far worse than even the V8 SHO

I don't know what a GRM is.

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/

It's a grassroots racing forum, most of the people there build cars from the ground up. 08+ era WRX and STI are on most people's avoid list there. Even using it as a donor engine, they all go for the 2.0 or the earlier STI 2.5.

What's funny is the people who ran the site even picked up a WRX for a autocross build and even it had an engine failure AT ITS FIRST AUTOCROSS

The only place these sold well was Switzerland, I saw loads of them there.

It's aesthetically pleasing from the exterior. The rest? Well, my Mother taught me that if I don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all, so I'll just leave it at that.

It's not in the same class or same price range as a STI so of course just like the WRX is. Other than engine reliability. 4B11T also has less lag on larger turbo despite the extra .5 displacement that Subaru has, probably has more to do with exhaust manifold design than anything.

Is a BOSS 302 better than a Mustang GT in every possible way?

Kinja'd!!!0

Hmmm - had a V8 SHO for near 100K, never a problem (ran it on Mobil 1 if that makes a difference). The issue I've heard about most with Subarus is piston slap, but you might be able to educate me.

Well you have the EVO9 AWD system, the DCT from the Evo X with a different TCU, the same 4B11T as the EVO X.....

Kinja'd!!! Kanaric > My citroen won't start
09/18/2014 at 19:57

The engine is literally the same block, part numbers and all, as from the EVOX, it's more than a bit better.

I can't explain it - if why different wheels, I think it would look better if you could see something filling the wheel wells. Maybe if I saw one in the metal I'd feel differently - can we even get them here in US America?

Kinja'd!!! Kanaric > Steve in Manhattan

Basically the issue with Subarus is three fold. The first is the tunes. Their tunes are so notoriously bad that people were having severe knock issues on US premium stock. General consensus on subaru forums was that you would be more reliable with a tune downloaded from the internet. This was confirmed when Subaru even issued a recall over it in the southwestern states due to the 91 premium here. However people out east, the people I know with ringland failures, all have this issue too.

Then you have issues with oiling, people routinely have failures at the track due to this. Then you have the ringland failure issues which results from a combination of this plus the fact they have regular cast pistons. The V7 STI engines people swap in don't have this problem at all and are known for being super reliable, but laggy. Just look up WRX or STI ringland failure on google. You will get lots of information.

Astonishing that, on a Car Talk call I heard, guy asked C&C whether to use a Subaru engine in his kit plane (which apparently people did all the time) or the old-fashioned (I think it's called a) reciprocating engine. Eventually Ray told the guy to stick with the time honored method that had worked pretty well up until now. If you put a Subaru engine in a plane, sounds like you better pick the right one.

This is a issue with 08-14 WRXs not early, and especially not 2.0l ones.

Also the car talk guys are notorious in mechanic circles for talking out their ass.

I really like it. Looks and all. Its an awd hatchback with some pep and way cheaper than an EVO. I cant believe that there's so much hate towards these!

Kinja'd!!! Kanaric > My citroen won't start

It's why in SP in Autocross that all you need to do is swap over some EVOX parts. They are even on the same line because of it, same line in SCCA Autocross means you can "update or backdate" so long as you swap over all the same part numbers. Since the engine block is the same part numbers as the EvoX then within the rules you just need to swap over a few things. I forget what they are but iirc the intake manifold and the turbocharger are two of them. It's generally not considered worth it though, usually people will just upgrade the turbo to something else, however for autocross it is if you want to be able to compete in the SP category. I think they are in ASP now.

It's like I hated the whole 4-door coupe concept when it came along, but I like the Audi A7 - it's a handsome car. And yet I hate the CLS . I also hate whatever BMW came up with in that class - just horrible. In the end, it comes down to personal preference. I'm sure lots of people bought Azteks because of their rugged good looks (sorry, just threw up a little in my mouth).
